disk flap

You may have experienced a spinning top and how fun it is to watch one go round and around. I'll bet you didn't know that engineers actually created a spinning thing called the "disk flap" too. It moves for an entirely different cause than a spinning top!

A disk flap is something that spins around in a pipe or tube which can affect how liquids and other systems move within the pipes. It more or less resembles a spinning wheel, though with tiny fins or flaps that can move when it spins. As fluid or gas passes through the pipe, they force these flaps on disk to open. And then this pushing would cause the flaps to spin. The rotation of the flaps is crucial as it allows regulating celerity and flow rate in case we are using this pipe to transport liquids or gases.

The Science Behind Disk Flap Technology"

Soon after, we will be discussing how these disk flaps work from a science perspective. For more on the physics, read this: The Bernoulli effect is responsible for how disk flaps work. This idea is equally instructive-it conveys: the faster a liquid or gas flows, the greater its pressure drops. In contrast, when it moves slower the pressure is higher. The liquid accelerates when it flows through tight spots along a pipe, and decelerates as the narrower part of a stream continues into wider regions. This increased pressure in the wider parts results from a reduction speed of flow due to reduced orbital spacing and vice verca, there is decreased pressue at pinch off zone. This explains why we can use the disk flap to regulate how much liquid or gas should pass because it is all about control of pressure!
